Google Maps or The Map Pack or Local Maps are the listings that Google displays for local businesses where they show a map with pins in it with 3 listings underneath.
These listings show brief information about the business and if the business has some Google reviews, the maps show how many reviews and what star rating they are. The highest is 5 stars.
Below is an image of a search I did for Electricians. Note that Google wants to give you the best option that is near where you live, so a search from one suburb may result in a different set of businesses compared to a search from another suburb.
Ranking In Google Maps 3 Pack Is Gold!
These Google maps are displayed directly under Google Advertisements that businesses pay for.
I am not sure what you do when you are searching for a product or service, but I always look at these Google Map listings because I need some social proof before I choose a provider. I am immediately checking the number of reviews and how many stars they have.
In the screenshot below, you can see the second listing has 25 reviews (that’s a lot for a local business) and they have a 5-star average. To get a 5-star average from 25 reviews is hard. One of the reasons it is hard is because some people simply don’t give 5 stars even if they loved the service or product. The highest they will ever give is 4 stars. (Please don’t be one of these people)
A customer can click on the Maps listings and go to an expanded view that has a lot more information about the company. They can even read all the customer’s reviews. Those reviews help searchers make up their mind about a company. If I was looking for an electrician and got the map listing above – after checking out the second listing and their reviews, they would be the first company I rang.
What a lot of people searching don’t know is that if they click on the “More Places” at the bottom of the 3 Map listings they will be shown lots of other businesses. Often, hundreds of other businesses. However, if searchers only look at the 3 that are showing, and your business is not there, you are missing out on a lot of customers.
A Couple of Tips To Get You Into Google Maps:
- The information that shows on your website for your Business Name, Address and phone number should match exactly with any business directory listings you set up for your company. This builds more trust with Google.
- Make sure you add as much information to your Google My Business listing as possible:
- Opening Hours
- Payment Methods
- Images and Videos
- Qualifications and Associations
